Five Months of Vibrant Winter Flowers

Why Hong Kong Orchid Trees?

Bring your winter landscape to life with the large, pinkish-purple blooms of the Hong Kong Orchid Tree. These six-inch fragrant blooms first appear in November, just in time for the holidays, and deliver five months of eye-catching color.

The Hong Kong’s vivid blooms pop against barren winter landscapes. Plus, the Hong Kong Orchid Tree is versatile – if you live in a colder climate, you can plant it in a container for your patio or even bring it indoors when the temperatures drop. In the South, the Hong Kong’s thick, lush foliage grows in an umbrella-shaped canopy through the season, offering the perfect privacy screen or border along your driveway.

Even better is the fact that the Hong Kong Orchid couldn’t be easier to grow. Hong Kong Orchid Trees will adapt to a variety of poor soils, ranging from sandy to heavy clay. And with a high level of drought tolerance and heat resistance, they flourish in dry, hot conditions. Nothing stops the Hong Kong Orchid from blooming for months.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Select a site with well-drained soil and full to partial sun (4 to 8 hours of sunlight daily).

Dig your hole twice the size as the root ball and just a little shallower. Place your tree and ensure the top of the root flare (where the roots end and the trunk begins) is approximately an inch above the surrounding soil.

Hold the tree straight as you begin to backfill the site, tamping down the soil as you go. Apply water to settle the soil and remove the air pockets, then mulch to retain soil moisture.

If you’re container planting, select a pot that’s about twice the width of your tree’s shipped container and ensure it has drainage holes. Use organic potting soil, place your tree, and choose a full to partial sun location on your patio or by a sunny window indoors.

2. Watering: Water your Hong Kong about twice weekly or check the surrounding soil. If the soil is dry about 2 inches down, water your tree. Check the soil for your potted Hong Kong Orchid at the same depth, and water your tree until you see it flowing from the drainage holes.

3. Fertilizing: Your Hong Kong Orchid Tree will need fertilizing three times per year: In spring, summer, and autumn with a slow-release fertilizer.

4. Pruning: Your Hong Kong Orchid will not need pruning the first year. Start the second year by removing all the dead branches. The best time to prune is in late winter after the tree has finished flowering for the season.

How big do Hong Kong Orchid Trees get?

Hong Kong Orchid Trees get to be around 25 ft. tall and wide but can stay smaller depending on the growing area and pruning.

Are Hong Kong Orchid Trees messy?

As with any flowering tree, the flowers will eventually fall and will have to be cleaned up. A rake or leaf blower can tidy up the area if this is your preference.

Are Hong Kong Orchid Trees invasive?

The level of invasiveness depends on where you’re located, but with this orchid tree there’s no need to worry since this is the sterile variety of the Hong Kong Orchid Tree. Little to no seed pods are produced and all the seeds inside are not fertile and will never grow into a tree, so you can enjoy the beauty of the tree without worries that it will spread.

Do Hong Kong Orchid Trees lose their leaves?

No, Hong Kong Orchids are evergreen, so the leaves will remain green and on the tree year-round.

Hong Kong Orchid

So far our Hong Kong Orchid tree is doing well. I was worried when it shipped and then was delayed for whatever reason at the Fed Ex facility for several days. However it looked healthy and was in good condition on arrival. We planted it immediately and it is getting buds already. The tree does not have many leaves and the “trunk” is very thin but it’s looking healthy! Keeping our fingers crossed that it grows well! If the tree does well we definitely will be buying more plants and trees from here.

Already Blooming!

I ordered this tree in early May. I am building a greenhouse/solarium and wanted a fun unique tree that could live in a pot for inside it. I jumped the gun a bit in ordering this tree and he's been hanging out on my deck waiting for the greenhouse to be finished. So far, it has been super low maintenance. A little water and it seems pretty content. I am a little concerned because it does seem to burn in sun, it only receives morning sun now, so I am hesitant about the greenhouse even though it does say it can take full sun. Anyway, I wasn't expecting to see blooms on this until next Spring, so imagine my surprise when I went outside this morning (end of July) and saw a beautiful bloom. I cannot express how pretty and unique the blooms on this tree are. Truly striking. It also grows very quickly, mine has put out some very long branches, so I will need to spend some time researching how to best prune and shape it. Even without the blooms, the leaves of this tree are so unique, I've been calling it the Camel tree because its wide leaves with their single center lobe remind me exactly of a camel's foot. I don't think I have ever seen a tree with a similar leaf shape. If you are looking for a really striking, unique tree, this is it! My only complaint is that I wish it was hardy for my area so I could have a big one in the landscape, but there's nothing we can do about that!
